As an American in Australia, I often come across a number of assumptions about my country based solely on Hollywood films and the news. Here was a conversation that took place in my office yesterday. It started out as a discussion about how many US states actually border Mexico-
Me: I was driving out to Texas to see my sister over Christmas and passed a lot of border patrol agents on the way…
Workmate: You have family in Texas? Don’t people walk around there with guns on their hips?
Me: Some people have guns, I guess. But it’s not like everyone’s locked and loaded.
Workmate: So some granny can just walk around with one in her purse? You mean, I could just have a machine gun in the back of my car?
Me: Well, you have to have a permit, and I’m pretty sure if you had a machine gun you would have gotten it illegally.
Workmate: That’s crazy. Aren’t people in Texas supposed to be really big?
Me: It’s a big state and I know plenty of normal-sized people there, but I’m sure there are some big ones too.
Workmate: Wow…
Later on talking about how expensive it is to mail stuff here in Oz-
Me: I mailed something to my sister once in Texas…
Workmate: Like what? Bullets?

hahahahaha!!!!! Ok I think you need to show this person my blog so they know that we are normal (for the most part) here in TX and that we aren't a walking movie set from 1883. Although I am pretty surprised how many people do own guns here and go to the shooting range for fun. And automatics are illegal. But outside of the US everyone does know the state of TX and that is pretty cool. I think if you said Colorado it might not be the same. haha. Speaking of mail I sent you a package last week. Hope it comes soon :)
