Brian and I both had the chance to make and exhibit small works of glass. On Friday night we attended the opening at Gallery Bilk for the 'In Miniature' exhibition which takes place once every other year. Established artists are invited to make their normally much larger work in miniature. The announcement features Brian's miniature inscribed bottles. He made mini versions of a few other pieces that were gorgeous, but I don't have photos of them yet! He sold three on that very first night!
I was invited to be in an exhibition called 'Pin' that opens this coming Wednesday night. Many more artists are involved and were asked to make anything that fit into the theme. I can't wait to see all the different pins and brooches on display made from all different materials (string, fabric, metals, etc...). I wanted to make something that was inspired by Korea, and chose to make ginkgo leaves. I called them 'Birds of Bukchon I & II'. One of our last visits to Seoul included a trip to Bukchon- a beautiful area with small boutiques, galleries and cafes and giant, old ginkgo trees lining the streets. It was fall and the leaves were bright yellow and spectacular. I always felt the ginkgos are the life of the city in Seoul- there isn't a lot of wildlife around and they move and flutter like bird wings in the wind. I was so grateful to my friend Trish for inviting me to be in this show, since I needed a motivation for getting into the Glassworks and paying for time to work. It was so much fun making these and also gave me the chance to have a talented recent grad from the jewelry and metals workshop create the beautiful silver pins for me in the shape of ginkgo seeds.
