Sculpture Symposium

The last few weeks have been... special. After some serious bumps, language miscommunications, redesigns and lots of late night dinners of nothing but mandu, we turned out a beautiful sculpture that should stand the test of time. Brian was invited to participate as an international artist at the Asan Sculpture Symposium. He was one of about 9 artists who provided sculptures for a new children's center in Asan; a beautiful new facility for children to take art, language and educational classes, with beautiful and bright architecture and a sculpture park for children and their families to enjoy. We met some lovely people who flew in from various countries (Spain, Germany, China, the US and Korea) to participate. The symposium lasted about 4 days and the first night they treated us to a traditional dinner. In the car on the way over, a man asked us if we like "dug".  I kinda froze and asked, do you mean dug that goes "woof woof" or "quack, quack"? Luckily, he meant the bird.

The first day also involved some incredible traditional Korean performances with dancers and singers and a presentation of thanks to the sculptors involved. They walked up on stage, shook hands with the mayor and dignitaries involved and received The Plague!

After exiting stage the German turned to Brian and said, "Oh, I see they have given you the plague, too!" Here are some of the sculptures made by other contributing artists:
And of course, Brian's! He had a lot of help from students and friends who we are so grateful for. The whole experience was definitely a learning one that we won't forget. Brian learned a ton about outdoor sculpture design and planning. The framing is all steel that has been salt-water treated to rust over time and the glass has an inner and outer pair of convex glass pieces that have been joined and veiled to give the impression of a floating center. The title is 'Eternal Rising'. I hope so many people enjoy it over the years!
