Insadong Art

Usually when you go into an exhibition, you probably aren't meant to take photos, but the artist was there and he seemed happy for me to take some pictures. You never know, it could result in someone wanting to buy his work! I absolutely loved these sculptures. They are made of welded metal wire that has been bronzed. He calls them Windimals, because many of them seem to trail off as if in a gust of wind. The rhinoceros is a great example. He also had a giant elephant, a puma and wall mounted dolphins that were gorgeous. I thought the eagle was breathtaking. He didn't mention it as part of his intent, but a connection I made with the work was about extinction. A recent article projected that by 2020, the tiger will be completely extinct from the wild. They just have no space left to live, and as towns get closer, they are hunted to keep people and their animals safe. I felt a powerful connection to that in this work, to see the thought, detail and beauty of an animal, and then see it being lost to the wind.
